On the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which covers a quarter of Shropshire, you’ll find Ludlow, an off-the-beaten-track gem with plenty to see and do. If stunning scenery is your thing, or geology or wildlife, plus lots of industrial heritage, then Ludlow is a dream destination.

Very close to the border with Wales, Ludlow has a relaxed rural feel while being a thriving market town. The historic town centre and the 11th century Ludlow Castle (said to be one of the finest medieval ruins in England) are perched above the River Teme and are surrounded by the stunning countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches.

Ludlow is an excellent base for walking and cycling with so much on its doorstep to explore: riverside walks, forest trails, quirky villages, and the Shropshire hills (if you like your exercise on the more challenging side).

If you’re feeling less adventurous, there is much to do within the town which is based on the original medieval town plan. Stroll through ancient streets to get a taste of the heritage Ludlow has to offer and discover some of the town’s 1,000 years of history. Browse around the Ludlow Market and an incredible array of independent shops, selling everything from food to fashion, art to antiques, books to bikes, candles to coffee. Feast your eyes on fine examples of architecture from the Medieval, Tudor and Georgian periods. If you fancy a bird’s eye view (and aren’t averse to heights) the castle and St Laurence’s Church have breathtaking views over the town and surrounding countryside. Can you spot the brewery?
